7 Ways to lose belly fat

Did you know belly fat is actually the most dangerous type of fat? A large waist line could be an indicator of disease.
It takes more than just exercise! We start to gain weight in our midsection when our cortisol levels rise. Stress is one of the culprits for high levels of cortisol secretion. When this happens cortisol breaks downs lean muscle (the type of tissue that burns calories most efficiently) and also holds on to fat storage in the abdominal region. That stress can even get WORSE with bad dieting; studies show that the stress caused by dieting can increase cortisol levels, making no change in belly fat even with calorie restriction.

So how do you shape up? Incorporate these 6 things below and you will be on your way to a flatter belly in no time flat!

1. Sleep
If you want to work late at night, think again. When your biorhythms are off, you end up eating more. When you’re tired you produce more ghrelin, which triggers cravings for sugar and other fat-building foods. Losing sleep can also alter your hormone production, affecting your cortisol levels that cause insulin sensitivity, prime reasons for belly fat! Getting about 7 hours of sleep a night is one of the best things you can do for your body shaping goals.

2. Short bursts of exercises
Do exercises that engage multiple muscle groups and work your cardiovascular system. Try planking, where you hold yourself in a push-up position, resting your forearms on the ground. Try 3 or 4 sets of holding for 30 seconds each. Getting up and moving throughout the day by going for walks will also help. Check out our 20 minute workout blog series.

3. Sugar is your Foe
Fighting belly fat is having an 80% healthy diet. Reduce calories by substituting it with protein, vegetables, whole grains, and replacing bad habit snacks with good ones. For example, if you have a sugar craving, replace your calorie filled latte with zero sugar and a ton of protein that will satiate while also torching your sugar craving! Another great trick is a sprinkle of cinnamon in your morning coffee or oatmeal- the spice has been shown to help stabilize blood sugar. It also slows the rate at which food exits the stomach, which helps you feel fuller longer.

4. Vitamin C
When you’re under extreme stress, you harbour more cortisol hormone, as stated above. Vitamin C can help balance the cortisol levels whilst you are under stress and can fight off a cold. Vitamin C is also essential for making carnitine, a compound used by the body to turn fat into fuel, making this vitamin your fat burning friend.

If you’re going through an emotional crisis, stress from work, or a bad eating splurge, increase your vitamin C – it’ll help counteract the negative side effects. Try bell peppers or kiwi fruits. These have even more Vitamin C than the famous Orange!

5. Eat Fat
Remember it takes fat to burn fat. Like I said above, its sugar that gets you fat, not fat. Good fats include foods rich in Omega 3′s, like salmon, avocados & walnuts. These foods are full of nutrients that help keep you full up throughout the day.

6. Slowing down your breath
Whenever you notice you’re feeling tense and uptight check and see how you’re breathing. Most people under stress either alternate holding their breath with short breaths, or take rapid shallow breaths. After you become aware of your own breathing, consciously relax your belly and slow down the breathing. This works best if you focus on slowing down the exhalation rather than your inhalation. With each exhalation you can say to yourself “slow down”. That is all there is to it- Simple but surprisingly so effective, try it!!!

7. Wear Fit Britches
How it works:
When we accumulate body fat, blood circulation becomes worse.  Because of a lack of blood circulation, we cannot metabolize or burn body fat.  In addition, very little heat is being circulated to that part of your body. When we take away the heat from that area of your body and it cools, the fat then turns from subcutaneous fat into cellulite. Cellulite is almost like hard muscle that is hardened from lack of blood circulation.

Fit Britches is designed to retain the body’s heat in order to get underneath the fat tissue and increase the blood flow to allow it to get into the areas where fat tissue exists.  By bringing the blood back into areas that have had restricted blood flow causes the metabolism rates to rise through release of the body's own nitric oxide, this in turn improves blood flow and oxygen supply at the skin level, causing the fat layers that make up cellulite to be melted down, leaving you with smoother and firmer skin.

Clinically proven:
Fit Britches has been tried and tested by independent laboratories.
Test results show most women reported improved appearance of cellulite, a reduction in waist, hips and thigh measurements and that their clothes felt less tight.

Results (average loss) after 30 Days:

  • Reduction in thigh measurements
  • 92% higher skin blood microcirculation
  • 8% more skin elasticity
  • 11% improved cellulite signs
  • 9% more collagen synthesis
  • 51% Better thermoregulation
  • 33% Lower lactate accumulate

Friends and Weight Loss: Use 'em and Lose It - #fitbritchesfitnesschallenge - Week 5

Losing weight can be seem a long journey. It's tempting to give up before reaching your goal. If you have a close friend you can lean on, it can make it easier to stay on the path of fitness. It should be someone you're comfortable with, someone you can count on to be there when you need them most, and someone you can share your achievements with. Here are some ways you can use your friend on your weight-loss quest.

  • Call when cravings are at their worst: When you’re having an urge to pick up something from your local fast food joint, speed dial your friend so they can talk you into eating fruit instead.
  • Swap for inspiration: Boredom can drive you to hop off the fitness wagon, so spice things up by swapping healthy recipes, strength training tips, fitness DVDs, workout ideas, health magazines, and running playlists courtesy of your fellow fit-minded pal.
  • Set up weekly exercise dates: Working out goes by much faster when you're chitchatting the whole time, it flies!! also when you have set assigned workouts in your schedule, you'll see quicker results on the scale. You're also less likely to skip a workout if you know your friend is meeting you at the track at 7 a.m.
  • Create fit goals together: Whether you both want to lose five pounds this month or are training for a 5K race, having someone to share your goals with will help you both achieve them. And once you do, you can go out and celebrate as a pair.
  • Email your food journal every night: It keeps you both accountable when another pair of eyes is reading the list of food eaten that day.
  • Take part in the  together, (your fit britches will be turning heads in no time) challenge each other to a forfeit for the least loser.

How to wear YOUR Little Black Dress for Christmas!

In today’s ‘Gaga-esque’ era of trying to look as odd and as cutting edge as possible, many fashionistas might have written off the LBD (Little Black Dress) for their Christmas Function but here at Fit Britches HQ we’re rallying for it’s comeback! We don’t know about you, but armed with a wonderful set of Fit Britches Best Control Underwear (award winning by the way!) Why not bring out an old classic and give it a modern twist?

In 1926, "Vogue" declared that the little black dress is the "uniform for all women of taste." Since then everyone from Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe to Lauren Conrad and Kirsten Stewart have proved the fashion mag right. Of course, each of those women are as different as can be, so it makes sense that their LBDs are as varied as their personalities, but that's the genius behind the little black dress.

Let's start with the LBD itself. You could go micro-mini or knee-length, full-skirt or curve hugging, or get one in lace, silk, or taffeta. There are millions of options when it comes to the shape and style of your little black dress. And just when you think you've seen every type of LBD, designers continue to reinvent this wardrobe classic.

We’ve picked just a few of our favourite LBD variations from Fashionista Site Polyvore.....

Don’t go too Green for this set from Julie. We love the green jewel tones she’s used in this set!

This ‘Audrey with a Twist’ set from Fashion Fountain is a gorgeous modern twist on an Audrey Hepburn classic.

Go Go girly with this candfloss couture ensemble from Iggy Rouvinen what a great way to take that often harsh edge off the black....LOVE LOVE LOVE for all ages too!

Even after you've chosen your little black dress, there are still so many other things to think about! The accessories, shoes, jewelry, handbag, jacket, tights and of course- your shapewear! These all play a part in the overall look of your LBD, not to mention hair and makeup. Consider your LBD a blank canvas, and all of these add-ons the paint. Together, they create a look that's uniquely yours. And by using the correct supportive underwear you really can outdo the new age creations some of the more ‘cutting edge‘ fashionista’s choose to adorn!

#Fitbritchesfitnesschallenge week 3! Your 20 Minute Workout!

If you have been following this challenge for the past 2 weeks then I hope it has been going well for you and you are on your way to achieving your goals! Whilst exercise is a big part of weight loss, toning etc, nutrition is as equally important, if not more so!

What is your diet like? Do you munch away all day on saturated fats and simple sugars? If so then the rewards of exercise will not be seen to their full potential. One thing that has a high success rate when it comes to dieting and watching what you eat is by keeping a food diary, as it makes you question whether you really want that pastry or cake if you have to write it down after you have eaten it. (Think of it as not being able to hide from the truth!)

As for what to eat, there is no rule apart from having a balanced diet. Make sure you are getting your protein from lean meats such as chicken and turkey. You need your carbohydrates from healthy foods such as sweet potatoes and wholegrain bread, pasta and rice. Don’t forget that you need fats in your diet, just not the unsaturated ones! Try to eat plenty of fish for these essential fats but they can also be found in foods such as avocados, olives and walnuts.

Now for this week’s workout!

Jogging on the spot x 30 seconds

Side Plank x 30 seconds each side

Push ups x 30 seconds (If you struggle with regular push ups then do them whilst kneeling)

Bodyweight squats x 1 min

Knees to chest whilst laying down x 30 seconds

Jogging on the spot x 30 seconds

Rest x 1 min

Repeat x 4!

Don't forget that if you love this and want more you need to join the #fitbritchchallenge

7 Shapewear Don'ts

7 Shapewear Don’ts!

Don’t Size Up or Down Your Shapewear

When shopping for shapewear, make sure to buy products that reflect your true size. Trying to squeeze into a smaller size will only create problem areas.

Don’t Ignore Care Labels

To ensure your Fit Britches shapewear retains its full functionality and enjoys a long life, follow its laundering instructions closely.

Fit Britches care instructions:

·         30 degrees wash cycle

·         No bleaching

·         No tumble dry

·         No ironing

Don’t Wear Waistline Styles If You’re Larger Around the Middle

A brief, thigh slimmer, or pantyhose top sits at the waist can create a muffin top for those who are larger around the waist.  If you fall into this category, choose instead the hi-waist version of each of these silhouettes, opt for Fit Britches Skinny Knickers or Skinny Shorts.

Don’t Put Shapewear on over Your Head

Many an unsuspecting shapewear customer has made the mistake of trying to pull on a body-shaping cami or slip over her head, only to find herself trapped in it.  The nature of shapewear fabric and its tight fit cause this outcome.  Therefore always step into your shapewear.

Don’t wear a stand alone brief or panty if you are tall

A brief or panty will become overly stretched, and end up providing insufficient coverage, when worn by someone who’s over 5’ 10”.  If you’re tall, choose a separates combination, such as a high waistline brief and a shaping cami

Don’t Choose Elective Cosmetic Surgery over Shapewear

If you’d like to change your appearance, wearing shapewear offers many advantages over undergoing invasive, cosmetic surgery.  For example, it’s less expensive, less painful, and more convenient than surgery, and delivers results that are more easily changed.

Don’t Rely on Shapewear as a Substitute for an Exercise Regimen

Wear Fit Britches shapewear as part of a healthy regime. Get regular exercise and diet for optimum results to ensure that you will look and feel FIT for years to come.
